Low light photography with Galaxy S24 Ultra

The latest Samsung Galaxy S series smartphone is launched now by almost 2 months and I’ve been using mine for about the same amount of time. It was a much needed upgrade from my 4 years old mid range phone, Galaxy A70 from Samsung. This blog post is not a review of Galaxy S24 Ultra cameras, I’m just sharing my experience I had with the cameras until now, particularly in low light conditions.

So far I managed to take some photos with the S24 Ultra, both during the day and in low light conditions. Nothing unexpected, the images taken in daylight are sharp and have enough contrast. The aspect that most intrigued me and that I truly missed from my previous phone was its capability to capture good quality photos in low light conditions.

Low light photography

The first time I took some night photos with the Galaxy S24 Ultra was in the classic light conditions of the city streets. And yes, in some images the noise is more pronounced than in others, but in general I declare myself satisfied with the result I get. Especially since I have not yet taken images in RAW format, although it has this capability through the Expert RAW application. I will come back with a new article in more detail about this application (don’t forget to subscribe), where starting with this year was added the ability to use ND filters.

Galaxy S24 Ultra, 5X zoom

A few days ago in Bucharest I attended a concert where I was really looking forward seeing how the cameras will perform, especially the new 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, the equivalent of a 115mm focal length. Although we were not near the stage, I was able to capture images with this phone that made it appear as though we were right in front of it. I used the 5x optical and 10x digital zoom features to capture photos but also videos. It was really challenging to stay as still as possible, however I believe I got some good images that I can share with you. Here are some photos I captured at the concert with the zoom lenses of this Galaxy S24 Ultra so you can check them out:

Sometimes, in order to take a good photo, you have to step out of your comfort zone and try different angles. By using as many different focal lengths as possible, you can convey a story in a different way, capturing the atmosphere in the room and not limiting yourself to the main scene. At one point during the concert, the lead singer asked the audience to turn on the flashlight of their phones. Then I got the idea that it would be very cool to capture that moment from another angle, from which you could see both the stage and the concert hall full of people. So I got up from my chair and literally ran near the stage and got this picture using the 12MP ultra-wide lens:

Conclusion

In conclusion, I am thoroughly satisfied with the S24 Ultra cameras, particularly the 5x telephoto lens, which has become my preferred camera lens.
